Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?

  • I always feel like an A hole while I'm sitting here at my desk with a light jacket on and everyone on the floor is out there pouring sweat. Makes it worse that I am practically in a giant fish tank with windows all the way around. I'm all " Tad bit chilly today chaps." while they are all "need....... water........"

For several years I worked in a fishbowl in the shop the way you are describing. The room was cooled with a mini-split AC unit that dumped the hot air into the shop, maintenance couldn't be bothered to run the lines a little further to the roof of the plant. So while I was bundled up in long sleeve shirts in the middle of the summer, the people in the shop had to deal with all the shop heat plus the little bit that was being pulled out of the CMM room. Hard not to feel like a jerk in that scenario. At first it made me uncomfortable, but eventually it became a joke that I played up any chance I got. "Man it's cold in there. I had get out for a bit to warm up... Dude, you look hot!"

To make the fishbowl effect worse, the room was right next to the lunch/break room entrance, so the whole shop had to parade past my windows going to and from each break. Neutral face
