Crazy Job Market

What's the CMM job market like near you?

I live and work in the far northern outskirts of Chicago. There is a fair amount of industry around me, but there are typically only two or three CMM job openings at a time within my commuting area. Most of them are normally the same few jobs that nobody wants or they just don’t pay enough.

However, right now it seems like there are quite a few jobs available near me that I'd be happy to take if I didn't already have a good thing going. Also, where I work we have been down a CMM programmer for many months and recently lost two more who left for greener pastures. HR tells me that no one is even applying, let alone anyone with good qualifications! We are working to build talent from within, but it's going to take some time.

How about you?
Are you currently understaffed? Or should I say, more understaffed than usual?
Do you see a lot more job openings near you?
Am I the only one dumb enough to do this for a living? What am I missing here?
  • I was hired as a CMM programmer but I'm being used as a slightly glorified inspector. This is not what was discussed/promised in my interview or in the conversations afterwards before starting work. Yes, despite the BS at my last job, I am regretting ever leaving there.

I'm sorry that your recent job switch has been such a disappointment. That is something that is always rough about switching jobs - all the unknowns. Everything can sound so great in an interview, but there are a lot of details you just can't know until you work there a little while. Sometimes you just have to take a chance and hope the odds are in your favor. Sorry to here that it seems they were not in your favor this time.

Thus far, this has been the worst career decision of my life.

Only time will tell. Even though things are rough now this may all still play out in your favor. You may look back at this time and think - man, it sucked to go from a job I hated to a job I hated more, but at least it got me to where I am today.

I wish you luck in finding something that suits you better.

  • Apparently they don't care about that here. A few of the other guys that work here area actively working on starting their own company doing exactly what we do, 3d printing medical implants. They have a business model, name, structure and investors in place or lined up. Management here knows about this and have taken no action regarding it so I'm taking that as they don't care.

That being said, I would want to do remote programming as my full time job. I was hired as a CMM programmer but I'm being used as a slightly glorified inspector. This is not what was discussed/promised in my interview or in the conversations afterwards before starting work. Yes, despite the BS at my last job, I am regretting ever leaving there. I wish I had enough money saved up to quit and take a month or so off while I find another job. I did send my resume out to a few places about a week ago but haven't heard back yet and I am looking every day. I will probably contact some recruiters this week. I have a few LinkedIn connections that are recruiters for quality and manufacturing. If I can't find anything, I have been considering a complete career change.

Thus far, this has been the worst career decision of my life.

What Cris_C said. As most of you know I recently had a career shift... it is going well though not all roses and blue skies, it has its battles of its own. Have I had movers remorse? YES! But I know it's irrational thinking on my behalf and I gots to stick out until I find "my place" just like I did in CMM land. Starting over in a new career isn't fun but I know that with hard work and perseverance I'll get to a place of status like I did before if not better or close to it. Whatever you do I wish the absolute best... take care of your mind.
  • We are going to be hiring here soon. My shop is in North Dallas (Close to Denton). There should be a posting within the next few weeks.

It is going to be more of a Quality Technician position though. It will be CMM operating, hand checks, bubble drawings, gage validation, in-process inspections, first articles, and CMM Programming (I put CMM programming last because it likely will be last, we are hiring this person to relieve me so I can program more).

We are going to try and find a "jack of all trades" or a good CMM operator and train them to do the rest.
We work Mon-Thur 6:00am-4:30pm. There is currently not a lot of overtime but that should change soon.

I don't know what they are thinking for salary but it will likely be around $28 per hour. If you do apply and interview ask for whatever hourly rate you actually want because they are actually really good about paying competitively I think most people in this convo are probably "overqualified" for the position because it will not be full time programming thus will not be full time programming pay. Very small shop (>35 people) but its an amazing place to work and the owners are really cool.

A lot of my coworkers live in Denton and I like to troll them by pronouncing it Den-tahn (Imagine Forrest Gump pronouncing it). I am childish so it is funny for me lol

the mcdonalds near my work is hiring shift managers for $21/hr

these mfg companies need to step their game up
  • not unless you take care of your retirement and don't count on the #1 champion Ponzi scheme in the country.

Yeah, but should a CMM Operator make more than $28/hr. Idk I haven't shopped the market in a while but that seems reasonable.
