Happy World Metrology Day!

World Metrology Day is an annual celebration of the signature of the Metre Convention on 20 May 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The Convention set the framework for global collaboration in the science of measurement and in its industrial, commercial and societal applications. The original aim of the Metre Convention - the world-wide uniformity of measurement - remains as important today as it was in 1875.

  • Well in honor of Metrology Day/Month. Why don't we share some cool metrology information.

Ill start. In 2019 the Global standard used to calibrate every scale in the world was changed due to the fact that the previous 1 kilogram master (a hunk of platinum-iridium alloy) had lost around 50 micrograms (the weight of an eyelash) since its creation. Thus changing the weight of a kilogram for the entire world.

If I recall correctly the theory of this loss in weight was due to air molecules slowly working their way out of the master due to slight vibrations of the molecules.

    Pretty neat stuff.
  • Huh. I hadn't heard that theory about the air molecules. I'm going to guess that current standard, a silicon crystal sphere, won't have that problem.
