CMM Use In Manufacturing

Hey guys/gals I am wondering how you and your CMM are used. aside from CMM operator, what titles do you carry? many? Engineer? Programmer? Metrologist?

  • I work for an international injection-molding company that specializes in producing automotive parts/sub-assemblies. My official title is Metrologist; although I don't really deal with anything related to uncertainty - I mostly update and test programs (PC-DMIS) that were created prior to my arrival here. Beyond that, I'm responsible for conducting 100%/Partial Layouts, GR&R and Capability studies when requested by the QEs for PPAP purposes.

I also have a big hand in tech/drawing reviews and new project kick-offs. Project kick-offs are so fun because I get to create new programs, refine it before finally correlating data with our sister plant in China to make sure the tools are producing good parts before we get them.

I'm also the quality inspection team go-to guy if any of the inspection machines in the Quality lab runs into any issues and needs to go through troubleshooting before getting them back up and running.

That's my job in a nutshell. It's been fun! Currently working on getting a couple of certs.
