How in the hhell do magnetic probes hold accuracy

I watch these probes being pulled from the tool rack all day and see reports asking for +-.001" profile....5 tenths on each side. I also know the machine is stated at like 6ish microns per meter or some nonsense like that. Anyway, I've done machining, manual/cnc, I've done grinding....how does this probe sitting on a rack, get automatically placed onto this probe mid-program within 5 microns or 2 tenths from the last time it was placed? That precision in my mind I have to be wringing gage blocks together to remove the air.

  • Cris_C ...real quick I gotta say my friend every time I see your avatar I think of the racoon whisperer, lmfao. Anyway, thanks for that link, that was a damn cool learning lesson for me that I didn't know about.

I looked carefully at the probes today, and always overlooked the slots/vees in the probe but never looked up into the arm and seen the spheres. Half my amazement in the accuracy of these tool changes has disappeared, but I'm still amazed how these small spheres are seated and don't loose a tenth or so of location or surface abrasion. I understand this is probably picked up on a qualification, but like backlash, its always there. I'm believe in the system, but I'm honestly just amazed how this system works, some engineering just impresses me wholeheartedly. Holding these tolerances is one of those things.
