Faro Arm 8th Axis unit

Good morning. I was wondering if anyone here has a Faro arm with an 8th axis tabletop unit. We are currently using A Faro arm (Edge model) with Polyworks (mostly because PC-DMIS does not support laser scanning on the Faro at this time -or so I have been told). We recently ordered an 8th axis unit for the arm, but can't get the unit to power up at all, even though everything is connected according to the instruction manual.

The other reason that the company went with Polyworks is the lack of keeping up an SMA. Unfortunately, this also means there is no real tech support to speak of. I was just wondering if there was some piece of tribal knowledge out there that could shed some light on this subject. We are all perplexed.

  • Turned out to be a much simpler issue than anyone expected. The Faro tech came out and installed custom firmware on the unit and... crickets. nothing... nada. The wiring diagram showed the unit getting power from the USB on the Faro arm. As it turned out, the USB port is connected to a hidden pull-down screen that has burned out. When the screen burned out, it apparently took the electric pathway to the USB port. I got the idea to plug the USB into a direct laptop, and voila! green light powered up. They are sending me an extension so we can have some flexibility, but the Faro is being sent in for repair and service on the burned out screen panel. 6 hours of trying to get the tech to listen and check the power connection. He kept insisting that the firmware would enable the power. But without power to the unit, it wouldn't accept the firmware upload.
