Gear Inspection

I would have posted this in the PC-Dmis for gears section but it seems quite dead there.

We're looking to buy some gear inspection equipment, at a considerable cost. I was just wondering how the PC-Dmis gear module compares to dedicated gear inspection equipment. I know very little about gears so I'm a little intimidated about it all. Anyone?

...what are you trying to check?...I use regular PC-dimass to check helical gears for angle and location...never tried for PA, Involute or Lead though...we've got an M&M Gear analyzer for that stuff...check out the quindos stuff...I hear it's super good...
  • I would answer this question with a very emphatic "It depends."

The PC-DMIS gear module will measure gears and give you an analysis of the gears along with different printouts for the various standards. If gears represent a small portion of the types of parts that you measure then this is probably the way to go. The benefits for this are that you don't have to learn an additional software package (it does run in PC-DMIS) and therefore you likely already know how to do a majority of the programming for this in case you need to make any edits.

Quindos is another option for measuring gears. If you measure a lot of gears you might consider it. It gives you a lot more flexibility and power but is a separate software package so you do have to take that into consideration.

Either one of these will give you angle, location, pressure angle, involute, lead, runout, etc. as well as your standard gear charts.
  • How steep an involute can a GEAR measure? I'm talking about the bending of the tooth around the axis. Somebody knows ? The seller says that GEAR cannot cope with such a tooth and I need Quindos.

  • Ask your seller to give you a copy of the GEAR helpfile in PDF. That might give you some answers regarding GEAR.
