Profile/Alignment Question

Please see below. What that is a plug gauge I've been asked to check. The hole is for the handle (obviously). The CAD file has the hole perfectly in the center of the profile like it supposed to be. Unfortunately the tool room did not give the hole as much attention as the rest of the profile. This, in turn, causes my check of this to be quite far off. So what I'm trying to do is use the outside profile as the "datums" to do my alignment. I'm thinking either best fit, or iterative alignment. Either way I don't have a ton of experience with either. Any thoughts, theories or conjecture on the best way to check this??

Thanks in advance.

  • John, I had a similar part a while back.

    This is what I did.

    Rough alignment.

Measure plane on top of feature. Level to plane and origin.

I selected features for rotatation. Maybe the smaller radii on the left and right side of the part. Created a rotatation between the radii for alignment. Made a midpoint between radii. Offset x and y from midpoint to create origin that matches part cad.

    Final alignment.

Scan part outside and create best fit alignment from scan feature.

    HTH.
