Ya see, this is another PERFECT case of "It works, so lets change it" that the "people" (?) that code this software seem to use as their modus operandi.
For years and years and YEARS and many versions and MR's, it was located in the F5 menu, on the GENERAL tab, second item in the list, "AUTOMATIC FILE SAVE" and when marked, you could then enter in how many minutes between saves. What those morons have done with it in the recent versions, I have no idea. Have you tried F1 (help)?

Help describes (under Automatic File Save) how I remember it working.
They talk about a check box (but don't say where it is).
They note, in the Settingseditor, it is the Autosave parameter,
that it needs to be set to 0 or 1.
So I went back into the Settingseditor, searched for Autosave and found nothing.
It saves to <filename>~ and <filename>^ as well as <filename>
I tried setting "SavePreviousInstances" to 0, that did not work...

for v2011/2011mr1 (specifically) its in the SETTINGS EDITOR.
Tick the '+' next to FileMan.... then down a few lines you'll see DocumentRecovery.
click on it and you can set to either True (autosave ON) or False (autosave OFF)
so much fun I believe they even created a webinar about it to celebrate the "enhancement"
