If I remember correctly the Reflex controller can scan but it doesn't do anything with the data; the data is sent through the serial port to a host computer for processing.
If you don't want (or cannot get) the scanning software on the host computer there are other options. The data streamed from the controller is just regular ascii text so you could capture it using Hyperterminal for example.
