networks, permissions and PC-DMIS

Hello all.

I have been lucky up to this point in that my CMM computer is not hooked to the network... i have complete control of it. Now i have an offline DMIS and it is on my other computer, which is connected to the network.

With that comes all sorts of problems, cause the network is very large (nationwide) and complex. I just tried to run the Offline program for the first time and it will not let me run it throught the set up unless i am logged in under administrator! I also know that if you do not run DMIS as administrator, it can sometimes casue you problems, especially when trying to change setting and have it retain them.

So I ask, have any of you found a way around this? They will not grant me access as an administrator, so that is out. My local network manager said that he could possibly put DMIS in a folder on the network that i could have administrative access too, but he is unsure if that will work. Any of you have any better suggestions?

Thanks,
Sam
  • TRUST ME!! GET YOUR SOFTWARE OFF THAT NETWORK!!! IT HAS BEEN NOTHING BUT HEADACHES FOR US! Run locally, backup your finished programs to the network if need be but DO NOT run from there as it creates administrative issues AND affects your CMM performance.
  • I wish that it was not on the network too... now the online pc and CMM are not on the network, and never will be if i have anything to do with it.. but the offline pc is also my office pc, and it is on the network. All programs will be saved to the CMM pc, and back-up on the network! I can feel the headache coming on!

  • Running PC-DMIS locally, opening the CMM programs off the network, works fine for me (not copying them to local HDD before executing).
Got the probe files on the network too.

As long as your company network doesn't suck (which seems to only apply to me and vpt.se), you can do this all day long...

You should be able to setup PC-DMIS to run as a normal user. Running as Administrator is a quick fix and solves a number of problems but these problems can be fixed by other means; it is a bit of work but it can be done.

First, I assume you are not doing this on your own. Your IT department that setup your computer on your network must be able to help you solve some of these problems. I can't believe they would have simply 'plugged you in' and left knowing that the computer is needed to run the equipment it is connected to (i.e. left it broken).

You do need to have a newer version of PC-DMIS. Versions older than 2010 MR2 had a habit of modifying and storing files in the installation folder and you will have a hard time with this. Newer is better in this case.

You (or any other user that will be running the machine) will need read / write access to the sections of the registry under HKeyLocalMachine that are related to PC-DMIS. You won't have this by default. You can get away with read only if you start up the machine first time as administrator but it would be better to have complete access unless you are certain nothing should change in there.

The locations where files are stored will require read / write access as well. If you have existing programs or probe files you will likely need to change the permissions on all of these files so you can access them properly (previously these programs were created by an Administrator, you are now a User).

The directory 'c:\programdata\wai\pc-dmis ...' should also be looked at as some files will be stored there (tool.dat file for example). You need to have read / write access here to.

The folder c:\user\public\...' should be the location where you store all program related files from PC-DMIS and not some random folder under 'C' drive. Putting programs on a network drive is Ok if you have a good network. I prefer a local copy and using the network to do backups.

There are tools available that will allow you (or your IT person) to monitor where and what is accessed by PC-DMIS if you are having problems. I would start with this so you know what you need to look at.
