networks, permissions and PC-DMIS

Hello all.

I have been lucky up to this point in that my CMM computer is not hooked to the network... i have complete control of it. Now i have an offline DMIS and it is on my other computer, which is connected to the network.

With that comes all sorts of problems, cause the network is very large (nationwide) and complex. I just tried to run the Offline program for the first time and it will not let me run it throught the set up unless i am logged in under administrator! I also know that if you do not run DMIS as administrator, it can sometimes casue you problems, especially when trying to change setting and have it retain them.

So I ask, have any of you found a way around this? They will not grant me access as an administrator, so that is out. My local network manager said that he could possibly put DMIS in a folder on the network that i could have administrative access too, but he is unsure if that will work. Any of you have any better suggestions?

Thanks,
Sam
  • Just because you are hooked to the network does not mean that you have to WORK on the network. Just do all your offline stuff on the computer, then when done MOVE it to the network. i'm hooked to the network, but ALL Pcdmis stuff is on the local PC hard drive.
  • It is on the local drive... but the computer itself is controlled by the administrators of the network... I can't even create or delete shortcuts on my desktop without permission! I log onto this computer as me, and i do not have administrative rights... if i need to change anything, i have to call IT....

    sucks huh?

Pretty much, if you want to RUN Pcdmis, you MUST be an admin of the computer. If IT doesn't like it, then tell them to take it up with HexMet. I think there might be a ton of crap you can do to the settings and what-not, BUT, for the best WORKABLE Pcdmis expirence, you must be ADMIN and run as ADMIN.
  • Well that stinks. Not sure how to work this then... cause there is no way they are goin to give me admin rights to this puter!

    Thanks..sam
  • Either you need local admin rights, or you need full permissions to a variety of different directories on your PC. All of our CMM PCs, both in our lab and spread around our shop, are on our company network/domain and have local administrator permissions.

Of course, for being a moderate size job shop, we have a quite sophisticated network infrastructure. That, and our IT guys actually know how to manage a network well enough to give people more than just button-pusher rights...
  • You don't need "Network Admin" rights. You just need "Admin" for the computer. I had more than one login where I used to work (one for network access & one for the local computer only) on the computer I was (still am most likely) the admin and for the network I was just a power user. Talk to your network admin about giving you a local (computer only) admin login.
  • What version?

They've fixed the whole Admin rights issues in 2012 (mr1 at least).

As long as install and run first time was done as admin
  • it is 2012 MR1... this is the first time that i am starting the program ( just installed it) and it is asking for this. you are saying that it is fixed?? a couple of weeks ago the Hexagon tech was here, and told me that if i want it to save all of my settings and changes to those settings that i should set it to run as admin. every time.

If it is fixed, then great.. where did you get your info?

    Thanks Sam
  • From the readme.pdf

    Administrator Privileges Explained
PC-DMIS versions earlier than v2012 require that you run PC-DMIS as an administrator
because some system settings (for things such as last probe used, wrist angles, etc.) were
shared among all users on that computer. This required that these settings were placed in the
LOCAL_MACHINE section of the Windows registry instead of in the CURRENT_USER
section (for user-specific settings). Making changes to settings in the LOCAL_MACHINE
    section requires administrator privileges.
In PC-DMIS version 2012 and later, PC-DMIS's settings mechanism changed to only require
Administrator access the very first time it runs at the end of the installation. From that point
forward, standard user access is sufficient.
The PC-DMIS installer has a flag built into the setup executable (setup.exe) that requires the
setup process to run with administrator privileges. If the current user has lesser privileges, the
setup displays a prompt to provide a username and password of an account with administrator
    privileges.
Once installation finishes, the first time you run PC-DMIS, you must launch it with
administrator privileges. If you mark the Launch PC-DMIS after the install finishes check
box (as shown in the above image) when installation finishes, PC-DMIS does this
automatically by passing the original privilege level of the installer onto PC-DMIS.
Note, however that if you do not mark this check box, you will need to explicitly right-click on
the shortcut and select Run as Administrator as described in Step 6 below.
  • Alrighty! I will get admin to start it for the first time, and roll with it! Thanks Ninjabadger!
