PC-DMIS Pro to PC-DMIS Pro with CAD

Hello all. I'm trying to find out what my options are if I wanted to upgrade my license of PC-DMIS Pro. Or maybe there is no option. This version does not have CAD and I want to be able to use CAD. The SMA allows me to upgrade up to 2014.1 and that's what I'm currently running at home.

The story how I got this license is actually long but I ended up buying it on ebay. I tend to go on ebay every now and then and search for auctions that might be selling PC-DMIS since they cost a small fortune and usually the auctions that do go up are CMM's that come with PC-DMIS which as you know are tied to the controller. This auction was for PC-DMIS Pro 2012, it came in a official looking pc-dmis case with a pc-dmis cd and the green hasp dongle.

I thought for $127 (winning bid) it was worth a shot regardless if it was cad or non cad. Worse came to worse I had pc-dmis for laser tracker. The seller that I bought PC-DMIS from is based in the UK and he sells 2nd hand survey equipment. My hasp key was part of a leica laser tracker and it allows me to run in offline mode without the hardware. Out of curiosity I searched the hexagon website and found this bit here.

Always Upgradeable"Also, upgrade your software as your needs change. If you have to use CAD in the inspection process, the upgrade is a simple. PC-DMIS Pro is CAD ready, and the only change needed is a simple modification to the portlock program. Best of all, all existing part programs are fully compatible with the new software."

A few months ago I got an email from a Hexagon employee who would every now and then send out an email to companies that they had done business prior, they were looking for business, which is fine, we get emails like this all the time.

I told him since he emailed me I wanted to ask him about my personal pc-dmis license. He asked me to give me the code that was on the hasp usb and the about page of pc-dmis. I gave it to him and he said that there was no record of this on their system, he asked for a name and the cd case on the back has an address, a name and everything and the leica system logo and where it was shipped to, which was France. I gave him everything and no replies, I sent another reply back and again nothing so im assuming he doesn't want to talk to me. Again, nothing fishy on my part, I saw an auction on ebay, I bought it and did not get far getting any answers which is fine, just wondering if you guys would know more.

I'm currently at work but when I get home I will post pictures if you guys want to see it, I also have the # on the dongle. Much appreciated.
  • I'd be shocked if you get anything helpful from Hexagon on that front. Companies like them license software to people and the licenses usually aren't supposed to be resold, except possibly when they're following hardware like the CMM itself. As far as they're concerned you don't have a legitimate license, and they'll probably make you buy the whole thing in order to do anything with it.

Thanks for the reply, figured they would not want me to get such a huge discount and legitimize the license, but the license is legitimate, not sure whether its transferable. Maybe one day I'll buy the latest version or when subscription cost comes down a little bit more, until then I guess I will just be throwing vector points into nothingness and aligning with my non cad pro version.
  • if you want to go back to DOS Pcdmis, I have an LPT1 portlock just sitting around.... Smiley

heh did not know they had this running on DOS but it makes sense, so the ui and everything was in dos as well? or was it run through DOS that then ran the ui in windows or was it all within DOS? Must be a realllllly old version, doubt it would run on Windows 11 lol surprised 2014.1 was running on Windows 11 to be honest.
  • all DOS, it had it's own UI, but it ran in DOS and Windoze 3.1. I still have the install floppies for it as well. It only needed 3 floppies!

Unfortunately you could have been the victim of fraud, just because it looks legit doesn't mean this key wasn't duplicated or stolen. It wouldn't be the first time I saw a stolen copy of a port lock floating around on ebay. But as far as your options I don't think you have any.

I figured I would not have much options if any, but as far as it being stolen or duplicated, I doubt it, I just looked again and the supplier is a Leica Geosystems authorized distributor and service partner, he sells a ton of laser trackers on his website, some new some 2nd hand and they are almost all leica stuff. Which makes sense if you see where the Dongle was initially shipped to, which is Leica, which is also Hexagon? That's news to me. The site in question is g2 survey dot com
  • it may be old enough that Hex didn't own them yet, you may need to try to contact the original seller.

You do know Geosystems is the outdoor/survey equipment group? They don't use or sell PC-DMIS. I'd be careful, this doesn't pass the smell test.

This is what the cd case looks like with the cd and dongle.
