Material Condition

How do you incorporate material condition on a Secondary or Tertiary datum? it appears the bonus tolerance is only calculated from the variation of the diameter size.

  • No CMM software incorporates datum shift bonuses in any but the simplest of situations correctly right out of the box. It can probably be done in PC-DMIS with a LOT of variables and other higher-order coding.

I do this in Quindos, but only for the most critical/expensive parts because the only way I have figured out how to do this is EXTREMELY complex.
  • Indeed. I use legacy to dimension location & skip datum shift altogether. Or if the feature is out I just write out bonus on the datum & add to the tolerance. Sometimes it's better if you do it yourself than the software. If I see composite FCF I just separate them accordingly & report separately. Today's design engineers are good with calculus & computer graphics but when it comes to gd&t, manufacturability, inspectionability their knowledge in these areas is in short supply. Not sure what engineering professors are doing when (re)designing the curriculum but doesn't look like they are doing the right job.
