Understanding Size Dimensions

Can someone explain like I'm 5? I cant wrap my head around the differences between opposed points, circular elements, local size and UAME. I just want to report the diameter of a hole. I understand that a cylinder will have some taper and it could be useful to report the max and min Ø in that case. Thank you guys.

  • In your example, UAME would be the size of the fully formed plug that would fit into the gage. Local Size would be the maximum size of a two point measurement. (Think Telescoping Gage). Opposed points are another name for a two point measurement. In order to be fully compliant with the Y14.5 standard both local and UAME should be reported. In practice only one or the other are often reported.
Circular Elements are just slices of a cylinder perpendicular to the axis.
