Probe rotation during manual alignment

Hello,

Can i do a probe rotation during manual alignment? For example I first want to align a plane on 4 different points with a fixed position of the probe.
After that i want to rotate the probe into another position and do an alignment on a cilinder. I Just dont want to crash the probe after the plane has been aligned. Can i do some kind of move point after i finished the alignment of the plane? And rotate the probe after that? I know its possible in DCC mode but i need to know if its possible in manual mode.

  • Yes. I would program in a REPORT COMMAND COMMENT that tells the user to clear the probe. Then put your Probe Change Angle command in there. Once you press Yes on the Comment, the Probe angle will prompt you and the angle will change.

    Thank you. So once the message (for example) "move probe higher into safe position" pops up i can move the probe to a safe position and press yes after that? If i press yes before i move the probe in safe position i am screwed, right?
  • yes, move the probe to safe position and press yes.
    if you press yes before you clear the probe , the software will still tell you that its about to change probe angle so you still have another chance to clear it. I put in an extra note as a double security feature.

    No PC-DMIS still ask you if you want to rotate your probe
  • Sure, you can either add a comment to move stylus clear, or set a safe clearance plane, enter DCC mode, move to clearance plane, then back to manual.
  • If you can make an alignment that will have the CMM able to measure for itself, don't rotate the probe during the manual alignment so you lessen the risk of someone running, hitting enter without reading and spinning the head into the part.

    I never (unless I'm only checking heavy roughing) trust the manual alignment for anything other than showing the CMM where the part is.

    If I use A, B and C in my manual alignment, I'm still going to measure them ALL in DCC.
    The DCC features are used to align the part.
    The DCC features are used to generate output for part conformance.
    The manual features are a waste of time between putting the part down and the machine measuring.
    Make them as fast and easy as possible.

    They don't have to be the datums.
    Plane, line, line.
    Read Point if you have tooling to hold the part with.
    Plane, plane, plane (all four hits).
    Just a circle and use variables to pull the Z out of it so you can take a point to find the part surface prior to running full speed.

    Keep the manual alignment as fast and easy as possible, and measure everything DCC with good hit distribution for accurate results.
    In my opinion, anyway.

    But yes, you can rotate the head in a manual alignment as everyone else stated.
    If I trusted the people I expect to run it, I'd do it with instructions.
    If I don't trust the people (and I sometimes have no clue who will run, so I don't) then I would do as Kai suggests.
