measuring a cone from partial data

Hello,

I have a cone measuring 5mm in diameter at the top and it tapers down to about 4mm at some distance. I need to determine the conicity and centroid of this cone, but am only able to measure 180 degrees of the cone, currently using 10 points. PC DMIS tells me that my conicity value is accurate to 1 micron. I just want to check, is it possible for the CMM to give me an accurate cone by measuring only one side of the cone?

  • The accuracy of your data depends on the length of the cone & the number of hits you're taking.

Since you can only measure 180° of the cone I would use more hits to cover the form a little bit better. Try 5 hits per level at 4 levels & see if the result correlates with what you measured at 10 hits
