Program execution stopped, CMM still moving

Today I was running a program on our CMM (Global S Green 9.12.8). Stopped the program as it was going to the first clearplane, and then noticed the CMM bridge was still moving. I turned my controller speed down to 0. Tried to modify in the edit window, and it let me, even while it was running. Then I executed my program while it was "running" and immediately hit cancel it again as I did previously to see if it will overwrite the actions it was reading. I then closed PCDMIS. I turned speed up again to see if it was still moving. It was. So I did a full reboot of the CMM, and it's fine now. Has anyone ever ran into this before? A rogue program running even without the PCDMIS software?

  • , when you hit the E-Stop are you sure you are cancelling the program correctly. I always after I am certain I have hit E-Stop then program stop, then cacel that BEFORE I contiue I slow the mcahine all the way down.

As far as I know I did everything possible to clear this. That includes exiting PC-DMIS completely, creating a new program, pressing E-Stop, and so on. This machine was going to do whatever it was trying to do regardless of what I did. It sounds weird and is weird at the same time.

It was a while ago and I don't remember all the steps I took. One thing worth mentioning with the newer DC controllers is that when you exit PC-DMIS and hit the E-Stop you might find that you cannot do a machine start without restarting the inspection software (PC-DMIS). This is related to a software lock where PC-DMIS must be authenticated with the controller before the controller will work properly. It makes if harder for third-party inspection software to drive your CMM. I have been aware of this for a long time so I think this is unrelated but it can prevent you from cleanly exiting PC-DMIS, hitting E-Stop, and doing a machine start in some cases without restarting PC-DMIS.

I already passed on all the details to Hexagon regarding this including the company contact information. I am certain they are aware of these problems and likely have fixed it already with newer firmware versions. As mentioned this is an older problem and it just so happens they were running older firmware. When you buy a CMM you end up with a controller containing firmware that was available at the time of purchase. It is easy to update the inspection software but firmware updates are another story so most machines run older firmware.
