Are there any rules that ideally should be followed when naming probes? Like the rules for naming features and dimensions to avoid unpredictable behavior? Is a space ok?

I was told by a wise PCDMIS programmer that ALL naming nomenclature in PCDMIS should ONLY be letters, numbers and underscores. Anything else risks PCDMIS doing math where it shouldn't be, causing weird stuff to happen. Unexplained stuff to happen. I have followed this since and have never had a problem.
Thanks for all the advice. Unfortunately, my predecessors broke all the rules for probe/feature/dimension naming, so I have a lot of cleanup work to do. We recently got a new CMM, so I'm trying to do things right from the start.
