overlapping CAD models of the same part

I normally use IGES files for offline programming and every now and then I have to use a STEP file even though I often get voids at import in the DEMON. I've got an issue with seams that I can't get a linear open or section scan to get past the seams using an IGES. I've tried different settings for the scan density, fixing the vectors, exporting from UG with different settings and still can't get past the seams. When I import a STEP file for the part I'm seeing a large void in the middle of the part where the scan needs to be.

I've never liked the idea of using both IGES and STEP files as the model looks hokey with the layers showing through each other. I'm going to assume that if creating the scan is successful my CAD data should be good.

Thoughts on how to get the DEMON to get over the seams in the CAD or a setting in UG to reduce the effect of the seams in the surface going from one surface to the other would be greatly appreciated.

TIA
