            Main Alignments end here

I had something odd happen the other day when making a program. I imported my cad, did my basic transforming to align it the way I would be holding it. After the first alignment I noticed that the head of my cmm in the graphical window was no long perpendicular but at a weird angle. I went through and checked my alignments and couldn't see anything wrong. Iv attached a picture and a copy of my code.

Any help would be appreciated

  • Most of my programs use read points. Some one point and most 2 points start.  So all of my programs do not use level at A1, I always transfer to one point (X,Y,Z) only,  DCC starts with a circle or round slot, after finish this check, I will level on the circle/round slot to help check other features. I always modify the alignment after any feature checked to keep prehit and retract small.

  • Read points and placing the part squarely on the table are boss!
I am slowly eliminating all the manual alignments from the programs here...

Can't wait for the next update to our longest part, its about 20' long and I am gonna do it with only 1 read point and the rest all DCC moves! Hate walking all over the machine to manually pick stuff up! (my boss is gonna freak out lol)

  •    I have a question for you. How can you show the machine where the piece is if you don't have a CAD model with only one READPOINT?
I also work on a large CMM and my pieces are usually placed on metal skids. I don't have granite.

I would like to learn this?

  • Without CAD? Not happening.

I suppose I need to elaborate, My machine has a track in the concrete running down the center of the long axis. The part rides on an inspection cart that pins into the track. That dramatically reduces the possible locations the part can be within the machines envelope so locating it with a single readpoint is possible. Essentially will be placing the probe inside a bore and hitting go, it will set the readpoint there and immediately find the center of the circle, then it will go above the circle and take a hit in Z next to it, now the machine knows where XYZ is for the part. From there it can safely travel to the other end with move points and locate the other end with a few hits that have really long prehit values. Obviously we will be watching it do this every time, but still way faster than a manual alignment. Once it knows mostly where the part is it can safely start picking up features for the actual datum alignment.

  • In your case though, if you don't have a track in the floor, I guess you could cheat some and add some reference lines to your machines floor that are parallel to your long axis. Jog the head down as low as you can and mark the spot on the floor, then jog to the other end and mark it again, connect them with a chalk line and lay down a strip of tape or something.

You would need to creatively ensure that your "part" was square to your line, but technically as long as its within an inch or two you should be ok. (and you dont have any holes in the side of the parts! as that would be bad)
