Swapping a hard drive with XP and PC-Dmis 4.1 to a similar PC?

I have a newer hard drive with XP and Pc-Dmis 4.1 on an older PC that is having issues. I would like to put this hard drive into a newer (similar) PC, is this something that will require a brain surgeon or is it somewhat seamless to do? I searched around here and seen a lot of people with crashed hard drives and starting from scratch but I have a good hard drive with everything in tact and working, the PC is just old and tired. My IT guy says he can find a very similar model that my hard drive will work in with XP.

Anyone tried doing this?

  • My understanding is that it is generally a bad idea to put a boot drive into a different computer.  There can be all sorts of issues with drivers and settings that can be best avoided by just doing a fresh install of the OS on the new computer and installing all the applications.  If the computers are similar enough, I suppose the risk of problems is low.

  • I can understand why he wants to just swap hard drives. Starting all brand new and installing all the programs REQUIRES an up to date SMA. You can use PC-DMIS beyond the expiration date of the SMA but you can't re-install it until you update the dongle. Been there, done that. Corporate required us to abandon XP and upgrade to WIndows 7. Cost us $3500 to update the SMA. Today it's closer to $5K for a single seat of PCDMIS.
