Damaged CMM Machine

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some direction as to what might have caused this damage on the Z axis ram of our CMM machine at our other facility. The programmer/operator is no longer with the company so we really don't have any answers on why it happened.

Have you taken that cover off to see if anything is rubbing on it? It doesn't look like something fell on it, more like something is scraping it. Perhaps color it in with black marker and move it up and down to see if the marker scrapes off?

Unfortunately, I don't have access to the machine. It's in a different country but the bosses were looking for some sort of clarification on what could have happened. We will have to wait for Hexagon to come in and give it a look over. Thanks for your suggestion.
