Spherical Diameters

I am trying to measure the spherical diameter of a partial internal spherical pocket.  I work for a multi-national company who has manufacturing sites around the world.  Because of this, we have several types of machines in use.  Our sister plant in Neumuenster, Germany uses a Zeiss CMM with Calypso software for the same measurement of this internal spherical pocket.  They are measuring the sphere by taking (4) radial analog scans of the pocket at prescribed depths.  I am using PC-DMIS to measure the same pocket, but am taking 5 axial analog scans of the pocket.  Although I could set up the program to perform radial touch trigger scans of the pocket, I would prefer to use the continuous scan method for speed and number of points used similar to the Zeiss Calypso. I cannot find a way to perform this in PC-DMIS.  Is there a way to do so and how do I set it up?

  • One way might be to create section cut curves at each desired level and then create freeform scans at each level.  After that you should be able to construct a BFRE sphere from your scans. 

  • I feel like there are lots of options to get scans like that.  Perhaps the easiest one that comes to mind is a couple of linear closed scans.  At each depth you would want to click on the model to set the start point and direction point at the approximate height of the scan.  Then manually change the Z values of those two points to be the exact height you want.  Then change the cut vector to be 0,0,1 so the scan is at a fixed height all the way around.  Then make sure that CAD comp is selected so the vector of each point of the scan is compensating properly for the spherical surface.  Then define your path and your good to go.  Repeat for each depth.  Then construct a Sphere.  

    I think this could also be done with a section scan or a perimeter scan with the right offset value.  You might even be able to do it with Auto circles using Adaptive circle scans using the Spherical option in the Path Definition tab.  

    I would prefer the linear closed path option just because it is what I have the most experience using.
