Star probe stops in the middle of the program

Hi

My star probe suddenly stops in the middle of the program. It looses connection. I have to touch it a little and control Z again to make it work. My probe is not heavy and i use blue cap module.

After calibrating the probe it stops doing that but then in few days it will again starts stopping randomly while checking a part.

  • 1. How long is the probe build?

    2. What size probes are on the build?

    3. How fast are your movespeeds?

    4. Do you have flymode on (will smooth out abrupt shifts in stored inertia on the sensor, during movement)?

Per Renishaw, the star probe build on a 6way cannot exceed 42mm long, and it's recommended to only be 30mm long.

Last big question, have you explored the PI200 switch settings regarding trigger delays (HALT, PDAMP, & debounce)?

Note: this is for the OLD PI200-2 "box shaped" black and orange TP20 / TP200 controller.  If it's a newer flattter, with aluminum top/bottom case it's the PI200-3, and the config switches are completely different.

        (Renishaw "PI-200 install manual H-1000-5029-05-B.pdf", then there's the "PI-200-3 install manual H-1000-7542-03_ig.pdf")

If you exhaust all these variables, you can ask hexagon to disable all probe trigger detections while traversing with the "move" command (it's a FDC setting, I don't recall which one).  Big word of caution, this can cause really significant damage to the system if you crash the machine with this active.

  • How are those limits even practical or possible for a TP20 6way?  If the extension has to be 20mm minimum and the entire probe length can be no more than 30mm, that only leaves 10mm for both the T1 tip and the 5way extension.  The shortest tip that I know of is 10mm, so right off the bat, any build will be too long. Also, the diameter of the module is 13.2mm and the entire span can be no more than 20mm.  How is that practical for undercutting?  You'll most likely hit the adjacent surface with the probe module unless you're taking a hit right at the extreme edge.  So forget about a surface with a small bevel.  And I believe that 42mm length is the length of the module and body put together, not the maximum probe length.

  • Just don't use extensions and just use a .5x10 or .5x20mm.Or even 1x10mm, 2x20mm, or 5x20mm, with no extensions

  • You need an extension between the 5way and the module.  And according to the image above, it has to me 20mm min.  So any tip will extend past the 30mm limit with the length of the 5way added in.

  • Oh I misunderstood where you meant, sorry about that. I was reading the 4 side tips, and not that measurement, I see that now

  • And for that matter, the width of the 5way would put the span of any two side tips past 20mm max.
