Getting Started

I have been reading the posts for a couple of weeks now. This seems to be a very friendly community.

We are getting ready to install PC DMIS NC on a Makino A100E as a pilot project. In this forum I am what you would call a monkey. I have 25 years of NC machining experience. I have limited programming experience but I am planning to learn Catia V5.

Our goal is to do limited conformity on the machine. We also hope to do statistical process control.

My first question: Hexagon asked us to have a universal datum ball set up to use to calibrate the MP700 probe. I have been using a probe ring that was provided by Renishaw when we bought the probe. My Renishaw guru tells me that the ring will work for what we are doing (5th axis rotary table stacked on B axis. On the parts that I will be running all of my checks will be done on one plane, perpendicular to chord line. Do I need the datum ball?

    Hi ChimChim,

    If you are NEVER going to use the 4th and 5th axis during measurement then you could get away with using only a ring and a gage length calibration. (Measuring on a ring, and meausing something of a known hiehgt to compensate the probe).

    The typical argument for using a ball is that the Probe vendor calibration only compensates for probe errors along a machine axis, so as soon as you probe something along a vector which is off a machine axis there will be some additional error. However, when using an MP700 this error is relatively low.

    As soon as the 4th and 5th axis come into play however, then the ball is needed to compensate for error in the 4th and 5th axis positioning. This is done during probe calibration. Depending on the machine geometry, this rotational error can be surprisingly high.
