Cloud of points alignment

Hello, I'm new to the world of PC-dmis. I have 8+ years experience running a Johansson CMM with Metrolog software. We just purchased a Romer Arm with an RS-1 laser and portable pc-dmis.

My question is when I scan a part with no hard probing, how do I get the COP to align with the model. When I use point cloud alignment, the COP does not align closer then approx. 10mm. In the manual it shows that if I ( insert>alignment>new ) that there should be a button that is labeled align COP, but this button is not visible when I am in the alignment window. Also my COP does not show up in the feaure list when I am in this window either, but it does show up if I open the best fit window, but when I highlight the COP and accept, it doesn't align at all????

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

First assumption is that you have had laser scanner training? You said you had a manual which is where the assumption came from. If so you have the CAD and Cop in the same split screen view of the graphics display?

What version of PC-DMIS are you using? There have been some changes that have not made it into the training manuals yet.

Was in Elgin last week for training. Yes, the split screen is where I am talking about. Our trainer last week was not able to get any closer either, he just told us it was close enough for training???? If I hard probe the part and manually align, I am able to get everything to come together, but I would like to be able to take the entire cloud of points and "best fit" them to the model. Also, when I use the refine feature, the alignment is never the same twice, not to mention it is not even close.

What version of PC-DMIS are you using? There have been some changes that have not made it into the training manuals yet.

When I look in the help section, about PC DMIS, it says " PC DMIS CAD++ Version 2011 MR1 ( Custom )"
