Range of accuracy when checking a circle

Can anyone tell me what the range of accuracy is in checking a circle diameter with a Romer arm vs. a mechanical bore gage? I have always been of the mind, and told so by people from Mitutoyo and Hexagon, that using a mechanical gauge over the CMM is always more accurate. Thanks for any info!
  • A mechanical bore gage will be more accurate, assuming the operator is using the gage correctly.
In fact, any tool's accuracy is dependent upon the skill of the operator.
I tend to mistrust results produced using "portable" CMMs since they are very dependent upon operator skill and care.
How many hours will a CNC CMM run before it gets tired?
  • Completely inline with my thoughts. I am trying to put in layman's terms, to a customer why data collected using a bore gage should weighed more heavily than results from the PCMM.

I am not sure what type of discrepancies you are dealing with.
I am sure that your PCMM has a spec sheet that lists accuracy.
You could compare that the the specified accuracy of the bore gage.
Maybe the difference will be enough to make your case.
