Portable class

Going to this class next week. 5 days of class, no scanning until the 5th day. Will I be wasting 3 days of time? Day 1 is about the arm apparently, 2, 3 & 4 are about Pcdmis, day 5 is "pointcloud scanning". Anyone take this class after having been using Pcdmis for a number of years? I've been using Pcdmis for over 15 years (or something like that).
  • For you Matt it would be 5 days of learning about the arm.......Rolling eyes You'll have a blast !!!!
  • I would assume you are talking about a 7 axis arm with the intergrated scanner ( RSI scanner ). I had this class this past January. I had zero experience with PC DMIS prior to this( all my prior experice is with Metrolog on a CMM ). I was kinda lost the whole time. Since you have prior experience, the class should be pretty easy for you.

Do you currently have an arm with the scanner or are you looking to get one?

It SHOULD be here either today or tomorrow. We have a scanner, but it sucks, WAY too time consuming to do even the easiest of jobs. Take a picture, save, take a picture, merge the 2 pictures, save, take a picture, merge that into the previous 2, save, take a picture, and on and on and on...... stand alone camera, no axis tracking, so VERY time consuming. For the easiest of jobs on the smallest of details, it took a minimum of 8 pictures to get the data, 45# camera on a HUGE tripod (which would hold ME up), yeah, no fun using it. So, 7-Axis SI infinity, and we'll see how much better it is, it sure can't be any worse that's for sure!!!!

Day One is all RDS training... checkouts of the arm, probe calibration, setting the firmware options, things like that. it's non-pcdmis
Day Two/Three, you'll be bored. Basic alignments, feature creation, construction, dimensioning. Standard.
Day Four, CAD import, Hard Probe manual scanning, Auto Trigger Options, Body Axis Scans, etc. "Wow, so that's how you do this with a MANUAL CMM. Meh. Neat."
Day Five, Laser Training. All new, batten down the hatches.

The new arm/scanner is nice for doing a quick scan of a part and doing a point cloud for a quick reference. I'm sure if you have 8+ years experience with PC DMIS and like PC DMIS you will like your new arm.
