Guides on pickup up odd details?

I've mainly worked with fixtures that have designed alignment features. We recently purchased a few romer units and now we're picking up individual details that may not have obvious alignment features.

Does anyone have a good resource that gives examples of aligning on freestate objects?

Also here is one thing I'm trying to wrap my head around:

We're inspecting the individual details to their CAD as they come out of CNC. Are we able to align to features that we're trying to verify to see if they're correct?

EX: If I'm inspecting the location of two bushing holes, am I able to use them as my rotation features if the entire point of checking the detail is to make sure those bushings are in the right spot?

Thanks in advance for helping my ignorant self.

  • The basic question is going to be "how is this thing used?"

It must be located somehow into the place that it goes.

For this block, the surface the dowels are in is likely to be what you should use as the primary.

For a block with no dowels or keyways, you can ask the machinists how they aligned it. Or ask the diemakers how it will go into the tool.

Worst case, scan the whole block and do a best bit.
