DO NOT 'remove' the old version. Either install over the top of the existing version (bad idea) or make a copy of the current working directory, re-name the copy, then install into that directory (best method).

DO NOT un-install, you do NOT know what you will lose (registry settings and so forth) when you do this, settings that you absolutly need. So, install over the copy of the existing, working version and leave the original there. Once you are happy with the new version you can, if you wish, simply delete the directory of the old version, BUT DO NOT UN-INSTALL!!!!!
  • Is there a way to get all that information if I lost it?

Probably not. And I do NOT know the current 'method' Pcdmis uses when installing for handling table maps and so forth. If your table map is NOT stored in the controller (still lots of them out there that store that info on the PC), will the install turn on the use of that table map? When they went to the registry (V3.5) Pcdmis would NOT turn on ANY machine's table map, didn't tell you it didn't turn it on, wouldn't tell you HOW to turn it on. Just one of those "nice" things the coders did for everyone.
  • So im screwed if i UN-installed the old software.. Crap this sucks.. I hope I can get this machine back up and running..

You may be or you may not be, it's going to be very dependant on machine/controller and Pcdmis version. You have probably lost all your custom toolbars and so forth. AND, it might depend on WHEN you un-installed the old version. Myself, I trust Pcdmis about as far as I can throw a Suburban...... if you are running "V-x" and install "V-y", then un-install "V-x", is Pcdmis smart enough to NOT un-install items from the registry that "V-y" uses that "V-x" used? Just as a 'textual' example, if V-x uses registry setting "Save Directory C:\putithere" and "V-y" uses that same registry setting, when you un-install V-x does that setting get removed, even though a different version uses the same setting? I don't know and with the number of registry settings and the current state of "Pcdmis BUG", would YOU trust it to NOT un-install that? Not me.
  • Well hopefully I can get tech support to help me fix this
  • All Globals keep map on the controller, he's safe there.

Our service department keeps backups of all "table maps", most 3rd parties don't, if you call us on the older machines (roughly pre-2000 on our products) we can get you the last map we worked with on the machine.

I thought PC-DMIS left all registry settings even on uninstall, but I could be corrected there. I think it's the user login/new computer/new OS install that usually kills these things.

support.hexagonmetrology.us has a lot of good information on what files to backup, etc.
  • Clay are you talking about in pc dmis forum or out of it?
  • What type of machine are you asking about? Your profile says that you have a Global but this thread is in the PC-DMIS vision section.
