Measuring in the Z axis

New user to PCDMIS vision, but have been using other vision equipment for the past 3 years.

I have a Optiv Classic 321 running PCDMIS 2014.1. I was asked to measure some heights (Z-axis) of a plastic molded part . My tolerance is +/-.002". The area of the part is very small and I'm having trouble getting the measurement to repeat. I include the code for one of the hits, and a picture of what I'm trying to do:

SP4_DVR1 =FEAT/VISION/SURFACE POINT/DEFAULT,CARTESIAN
THEO/<-0.087,0.005,0>,<0,0,1>
ACTL/<-0.087,0.005,-0.00031>,<0.0010501,-0.0014976,0.9999983>
TARG/<-0.087,0.005,0>,<0,0,1>
SNAP=YES
SHOW FEATURE PARAMETERS=NO
SHOW_VISION_PARAMETERS=YES
TYPE=AUTOMATIC HIT TARGET
MAGNIFICATION=4.63372
HIT TARGET COLOR=RED,NOMINAL COLOR=GREEN
HIT TARGET=SA1,YES,0.0142,0.01119
FOCUS=AUTO,NO,,NONE,-1,-1,-1,YES,Top Light=<OFF,85,ON>,Bottom Light=<OFF,61.7,OFF>,Ring Light=<OFF,55,ON>

I tried to use just Top or Ring light but I can't get enough lighting to see the feature. The area I'm trying to measure is @ .005" square. When I adjust my search box to fit only the part surface, I see a warning about the target size being too small. What is the smallest I can make the target and still get it to work? Is it OK to have the search box include areas that aren't of interest? Is it possible to measure this and get it to repeat?

I already have my opinion on whether this can be done but curious on other's experience.

Thanks for your help.

  • Thanks for the response Jefman. How repeatable are your measurements in the Z? I'm still not having any luck getting my numbers to repeat. I have some that will vary over .001" on the same parts. All I'm doing is cycling the program across the same parts, not unloading and loading the fixture.
