How hard is it to make tranistion for CMM to vision

I've been working with PC-Dmis CMM for about 15 years.
I also have experience with an OGP vision system (which I hate the software) for about the same amount of time.

Can someone give me their experiences on the transition that I'm going to have going from CMM to an Optiv classic with a TP20 tactile probe and vision capabilities?

    So I personally didn't have much of an issue. Understanding the lighting and how it affects measurement is going to be something you're just going to have to learn with experience and the creation of points and the best way to perform the creation of them on the vision side can be tricky but nothing too complicated. But when it comes to understanding how to do all of this in PC-DMIS if you don't have someone to teach you then you're really going to need to take a class on it. It's not intuitive and can make life difficulty.

    I did it without much input but it wasn't with PC-DMIS it was on a much less friendly software. The bad news is once you see how amazing vision is you'll never understand how you survived without it.
  • I was in a very similar situation. I programmed CMM’s for 20 years, used PC-DMIS for 11 years, and used an OGP vision CMM for 13 years. We replaced the OGP with a Hexagon Optiv Performance 664 about a year and a half ago. The decision of what to buy was mine, within a certain budget, and I did not want another OGP because of the software.

    I was told by the instructor for PC-DMIS vision that I just needed to get used to the lighting and that just about everything else was the same. That wasn’t true. One thing that was difficult for me was the fact that I used v4.1 for all of that time and was suddenly looking at a very different interface with v2014.

    With the contact probe CMM you have manual features which certainly come in handy for the initial alignment. These are not part of the vision software. All measurements are with Auto Features, but they can be with auto or manual hits, with or without DCC.

    You will definitely need to attend the vision class.

    The biggest change that I found was measuring a circle. Even though the OGP software had a lot of dumb limitations it was extremely easy to measure a circle. Just double click the mouse on the edge and it would follow the edge until it came back to the start. The PC-DMIS vision software isn’t that smart. It needs to know the diameter and location of the center before it can measure it.
  • rickfngp, when you are in the AutoFeature dialog with circle selected for the feature type, double click on the edge of a circle that is completely in the camera image and it will find the circle, similar to what OGP does (you can do this for lines as well). If the circle is larger than the camera image, you will need to single click 3 points on the circle to identify it. If you are working with CAD you can select a hole or box select a group or pattern of holes to create the feature measurement.
  • Similar situation...I worked with OGP software for about 2 years. Hated it. It took a little time to learn the in's and out's of PC-DMIS Vision, but in the long run, it is so much more easier to use. Especially dealing with alignments.

    It's rare that that a circle that I need to measure is completely within the field of view.
    Clicking the three points on a 150mm diameter circle requires a lot of driving with the joystick, for part after part.
    I don't have access to CAD models.
    The point was that with the OGP it could follow the edge visually and PC-DMIS needs to be told where to look for that edge for an auto-circle.
  • Don't know about Optiv, nor fixed vision cmm.
    I just used CMM_Ve for some years now, and vision needs some cautions. lighting can change the result, and chamfer are always a problem !!!!
    But the software is nice, and vision gives access to measurements that you cannot do with contact...

    BKulpa, how is your transition going?

    We purchased an optiv classic 321 with touch probe capabilities and it was set up about a month ago. PC-dmis CMM to Vision is nearly identical with the exception of a few extra vision features. Went to Vision 101-102 training, explained a lot how the machine finds edges, how the light sources work, cross calibration form vision probe to touch probe, importing cad, 2D alignments, etc... A few days were a refresher to CMM 101 courses constructions and dimensioning. So glad I was able to attend vision training.

    Turns out the part we are looking to inspect wasn't really a good candidate for a vision system so we are primarily using the touch probe for inspections.

    I'm up and programing with one little hickup with the tactile probe unloading, tech support is working on the problem now.

    Create an UNLOAD probe, this will be a fake probe. It does not need to be used in calibration.

    Hit Ctrl+Alt+P, and click Setup... and at the bottom of the page, there is a drop down to specify which probe should be used for unloading...select that probe.

    That should solve your problem. And when you want to switch from probe to vision, LOADPROBE/UNLOAD and then select LOADPROBE/VISION.
