Reverse Engineering

Is it possible to scan an object with no model, and export the scan to generate a model, Ie an IGS file, cad file, etc. etc.

If so, how could I go about doing it? We just got a laser scanner, and I went through the course we just did not have a lot of time to play around with it.

  • Yes you can easily scan an object without a model. You are supposed to be able to reverse engineer the scan into a CAD. We were told the same thing when we received our training.

When I have tried this, the exported model file was large, like 500mb, to 1gb. And even if you could get SolidWorks to open it, it would be a giant condensed sphere. If you figure something out I'd like to know.

  • just tried it but everytime I would do a manual scan; pcdmis kept seizing up on me. It did it during our class during manual scans too, but would work whenever we had a model for whatever reason.

So I'm probably doing something wrong. Time to go through the class again XD

  • For manual scans, you can just use the probe enable button(top left button on NJB Jogbox) as long as the HP-L-10.10 is attached to start a scan, and each press of the probe enable will add a point for a path the laser scan will follow.

For example, start the laser scanner where you want it, press probe enable, move it a few inches in the direction of your scan path desired, probe enable again. Repeat in smaller or larger increments for however much you need

No need to hit "insert > scan" it just will insert it for you

I have had PC-DMIS seize up on me as well, but it was due to the parameters of the scan being too tight, causing PC-DMIS to generate like thousands of points along the scan path

  • Yeah, that's how I was doing it. Monday I will have to look at the filter settings they might be too tight. We have the same head, the L-10.10.

I thought you had to adjust the filer scanning after the actual scan though. Where are the filter scan settings?

  • Cloudpoint Operator > Select > Filter you mean? Make sure you add the Cloudpoint toolbar for easier access
