Multiplexer help

A bit of a long shot posting here

I was wondering if anyone on these forums has any experience with setting up a multiplexer.

We have hard gauges with DTI's on them which connect to a multiplexer and then that connects to a pc and into the SPC software. I am running windows 7 on the pc and I am thinking this is where the problem lies. basically the multiplexer connects via RS232 port, when this is plugged in nothing seems to happen, no additional devices in device manager or anything. I have tried using hyperterminal to test but I cannot work that either.

Basically its a big shout for HELP

thanks in advance for any help.

  • I have finally solved it today after a long time with no luck. Like you say it does point to a problem between using RS232 on newer computers.

Basically I asked my boss if I could use my company card, drove to the shop and bought a RS232 to USB cable. Worked straight away.

When your spending quite a lot of money for essentially a black box I think they need to look into a usb connector rather than RS232.

Except USB is the new RS232. This weeks flavor is USB-C and Thunderbolt or somesuch. There is a great vid I saw the other day spoofing an Apple engineer talking about how everyone is going to have to walk around carrying a bag of dongles to connect their various devices and each one is $20-80! Hilarious. Neutral face
