We have a lot of thin parts, some .030" with ±.0002 tolerance. The molded parts aren't that complicated, we do a lot of machining with CNCs with tight tolerances. I'm in search of a new job now and a lot are metal, so hopefully I will know that next. I'm scared to leave because this is the first factory job I have had and I am secure here. Always worked outside before this, landscaping and construction.
I work for a small company and I don't have any room to grow. However there is no one else here that can program so I am safe. I think there is more out there for me and I need to explore that. I think I am a good programmer but I have only worked here and I only know what I know.
I am a firm believer if you want to grow and expand and make top dollar in the field you must move on. There is only one question and that is "Are they paying you your worth?" Most time the answer is no if you have been only with one company. And as far as I can tell by offers to me in the medical industry they do not pay any where near what automotive does. And being in a small company is tough to move up because you fill a niche and its easier just to hire a QC Manager than to replace a good cmm programmer. There are jobs everywhere any more they are all across the county and globe. Go to indeed.com and check it out. Also craigslist.com One of the best ways for a guy in at a small company to get a raise is to seek out another company and see what they offer and let your company match it or better because maybe they really don't know your worth too.
As for being in landscaping some of the best cmm programmers out there have mowed a lot of grass. So tell me is it better working on the inside or the outside? I like my climate controlled environment.
