Update Everything

Hello!
PCDMIS 2013 MR1 SP5 on an Optiv Performance 1z443
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
So apparently I can update PC-DMIS to 2014 or 2015 from 2013 MR1.
Neat.

I'd like to try that.

But I've got a real ****ed setup here, and wanted to know of some tips that'll help me pull this off.
I'll have a week or so of unlimited access coming up, and then I'll just have to pause it by putting the old HD back in and running 2013.
The relevant hardware is:

|Two graphics cards & three monitors|Falcon Camera Controller (I'll fetch the model number)|Enough HD and RAM space|Windows 7 x86|

The way I intend to do it is:
Take one of the regular backups of our CMM computer and back it up somewhere externally. Really just for my sake.
Then backup the registry (which concerns me*)
Then backup the Settings Editor and all relevant PC-DMIS files

Shut it down, install a new hard drive with Windows 10 x64. Update all relevant drivers (Falcon controller, graphics, etc.)
EDIT2: I can install Windows 7 x64 and be okay. I'd personally like 10, but I understand it's not tested
Restore the registry**

Install PC-DMIS '14 or '15 x64
Restore the Settings Editor***

Put the relevant files back where they were
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The concerns I have are:
*If I backup the registry and restore it, I feel like that will screw everything up.
Can I back up just the PC-DMIS sections of it? If so, anywhere I can find a list?

EDIT: Correct me if I'm wrong, but won't backing up the settings editor also backup the relevant registry settings? I thought that's what that was

**Will restoring the Settings Editor from 2013MR1x86 to 2014/15x64 screw anything up?
-------
I've done plenty of IT, and installed Windows 10 a billion times. PC-DMIS, not so much, but I like to delve in and start deleting files to see what happens!

Backups, backups backups...

Anyways, yeah, want to upgrade, don't want to have Hex out here for a week if I can do it myself.
  • Never do a full Registry restore! (Unless the computer is 100% identical to the one the backup is made from! That includes making the contents of the HD a clone of the original HD down to the serial number!).

Yes, a Settings Editor Backup contains all PC-DMIS Registry settings (if that checkbox was marked when creating the backup).

No, restoring a SE backup to a newer version will not (wilfully) screw anything up. There may be new settings that don't get any values, though.

What kind of license do you have? Parallel/USB Portlock or software license (LMS)?

    If portlock, there may be problems with Windows, HASP driver and old PC-DMIS versions (neither Win7 nor Win10 can use the old parallel port lock, must be the newer, green, USB one; older PC-DMIS versions have problems with the HASP driver for Win10);

If LMS you will need to Rehost it if you change the HD - return the license from the old HD, activate on the new, test, return from the new, activate on the old. I don't know about Hexagon/Wilcox US policy, but here in Europe, each license Rehost must be requested from Hexagon/Wilcox, it can't be done spontaneously...

If you have room enough on the current HD, it is easier just to install the newer PC-DMIS version there - every version has its own install folder, its own place in the Registry, they can happily coexist. The important thing to remember is that probe files and part programs used by the newer version will not be possible to open in the old version (Backup before testing in the new version!).
  • Thanks!
I will use your advice and get the ball rolling.
I have the green portlock for both Online and Offline, which I'm hoping will make things a bit more seamless.
It wouldn't be a bad idea to try it and get it working on the machine on 2014/15 on the current setup, then transfer the verified working settings over to an x64 OS on the same machine.
That's all I really want, is to use my current setup on 64-bit Windows.

I will update with progress as I make it
  • FWIW? Yeah, stick with the green fish thingie. Keeps licensing simpler IMHO. (especially if you wish to go mad science on your installs) For our Optiv 443 'performance'.....which had Falcon64/Framegrabber issues....nothing so satisfying as rolling up one's sleeves, adventuring under the hood and getting the handsdirty. Beats the bejeezus out of reading the Help Files Sunglasses
(although it did lead to some temporary heart palpitations)
  • I know from experience! And FWIW I much prefer the portlock. Anything that ties anything to anything specific (license to computer/motherboard, etc) isn't efficient in the business world in my opinion.
  • Heh! Now... we are an army of TWO!!
  • Well I learned a lot about this process. I can do it, but I need to get into contact with Hexagon to get a password that they may not even have.
As an update, I was able to get the jogbox to communicate with the CMM and move it around, which was cool. All of the buttons were functional, and I could view the status on all of the necessary components (probe, camera, rack, rotary, etc) I just needed to utilize the restore function of the MycBackup.exe file.
Apparently this is part of the Laser3.exe software located in the PC-DMIS install directory, probably installed with the Vision interface. The Laser3.exe is the Mycrona Calibration Software, and is used for, you guessed it, interfacing with, setting up, and verifying Mycrona hardware. Or something. I delved into the software quite a bit last night, but not enough to find out which part is Mycrona.

Regardless, since I have to talk to Hex anyway I might as well ask if they can do it, hopefully remotely
