At the beginning of each of my shifts, I calibrate my stylus to 0.001 mm. 80% of the time I only use it in position a0 b0. And when it shows 0.002 (or even 0.003) I start wiping everything in the world until it is 0.001. Sometimes it takes a long time. How do you solve this problem?
Do you need it THAT tight? 2 or 3 micron std dev is ok. What size probe(s) do you use? The longer/larger the probe, the larger the standard deviation, typically. Vibration will also affect the std dev.

I calibrate once a month (if then). Assuming it runs "OK" without any mishaps, I'll take it that long. I have a running list of all probes/tips used and calibrate all of them at once, takes about 2.5hrs to do them all.
Many variables are involved and may or may not suit your setup. Just worth a try to, potentially, get you to invest time in a study to perhaps loosen up (or tighten) your procedure.
So, I have a yes/no question at the top of every program that asks them if they want to calibrate. If they say "yes", it executes autocal commands. "No" will skip over autocal and run the rest of the prg. Operators are instructed to calibrate every time they use the machine if they're first walking up to it, no exceptions.
This is quite extreme, but it has kept me out of trouble.

Vladimir The average human hair is approximately 0.075mm. So, now when you put that into perspective, the difference between 0.001 and 0.002 is very very minimal, especially when you're talking about std dev on your probe off of 13+ hits on the sphere. I'd start scratching my head if I start seeing above 0.004, if you're consistently see ones and twos. I have a disk probe that is always around 0.005 or 0.006 on average. But that's the nature of the probe.
We have an artifact that we measure every shift. It only checks the 90's on each tip but after a full cal, if those are looking sketchy , the rest of them are as well. Really depends on what type of TOL. you deal with.

You are OCD...wasting time worrying about .002 microns...are you checking parts for NASA rocket boosters ?
