Daily calibrations

At the beginning of each of my shifts, I calibrate my stylus to 0.001 mm. 80% of the time I only use it in position a0 b0. And when it shows 0.002 (or even 0.003) I start wiping everything in the world until it is 0.001. Sometimes it takes a long time. How do you solve this problem?

  • Do you need it THAT tight? 2 or 3 micron std dev is ok. What size probe(s) do you use? The longer/larger the probe, the larger the standard deviation, typically. Vibration will also affect the std dev.
  • The average human hair is approximately 0.075mm. So, now when you put that into perspective, the difference between 0.001 and 0.002 is very very minimal, especially when you're talking about std dev on your probe off of 13+ hits on the sphere. I'd start scratching my head if I start seeing above 0.004, if you're consistently see ones and twos. I have a disk probe that is always around 0.005 or 0.006 on average. But that's the nature of the probe.
