So I was wondering what is everyone's background. I spent 23 years in medical on a Zeiss. Spent a couple years in aerospace on a Romer arm with PCD. Left the Quality world and turned wrenches for a few years at an amusement park. Now I am back to the CMM Brown and Sharpe world this time but in the firearms business. Working one finishing up my Manufacturing Engineering degree in the next year.
  • I started off as an assembly technician inspecting glass lenses and helping on the assembly line. There wasn't a dedicated inspection line and the assembly line was losing a lot of time inspecting their own lenses so after a few months I gathered some people and created my own inspection line. I showed the boss and asked if I could keep my team full time. Got a raise and a promotion to supervisor. I ran my inspection team for almost 3 years and the assembly line went from 10 parts a day to 100.

I got bored doing the visual inspection so I started working an hour late in the metrology department helping with inspection of machined parts. After a few months there was an opportunity for a full time position in that department so I interviewed and got it. I learned the basics there but I left because of how they were handling the whole Covid thing as I no longer felt safe.

I was desperate to get out of the old place so I took the first opportunity I got in a plastics factory. That's when I started really programming CMMS. At the old place, I was formally trained on Calypso and wanted to program but I was told it was a waste of time for me to program. There was a miscommunication during the interview and they thought I knew what I was doing but I was so desperate for the opportunity I didn't really correct them. I taught myself the basics in a couple weeks and have been learning ever since. I've been here nearly 6 months and I'm their only PC DMIS programmer.

So pretty much I'm only in the quality field by mistake. I was bored and saw an opportunity for improvement and advancement and went for it. I have no strong feelings about this field, I'm just doing OK at it and am worried about failing if I try to switch to a different career.

  • Quite impressive for your age.

Being a DMIS team lead is where I want to be and am in the process of pursuing. I practically am now but I want to be programming and programming lead without having to run the CMM. I would run first runs of more complex parts but that would be it.

I'm honestly surprised they don't give me an extra $1.50 an hour per 100 posts on here...Rolling eyesSunglasses

Thanks man, I'm just trying my best like everybody else. I live in an area with a lot of advanced manufacturing so the pay is competitive here and there are jobs available. The situation you described is the dream! Hopefully I get there one day myself. Honestly though, I like spending part of my day programming but then also running the machine. Seeing what we create come to fruition is half the fun Sunglasses

I would run the CMM with complex parts until the program is proven. Being the programmer, I am able to correct programs faster if there is an issue.

I live in Boeing defense land but not many places are hiring at the moment. One place is and its the place I've wanted to work for quite a while now. They are new to DMIS (less than a year) and I really want to work for them.

I have. Sent it in 2 days ago. Fingers crossed! I feel like I have so much more to offer, untapped potential. All things I'm not able to do where I'm at.

Side note: Funny how most of us aren't commenting anymore, it's all quoting posts now. Must be going for the DMIS forum post count pay bump...

How big of a raise you gonna get when you get there??? SmileySmileySmiley

A phonebook under the chair is as close to a raise as I'm getting this year lol

They've slashed some benefits on us (yearly raises frozen until further notice, 401K match is gone, tuition assistance is gone, bonus program is gone, health insurance is crappier, etc...) Disappointed. However, I am still employed and that is a blessing.

Good god! That sucks. Hopefully things turn around.

I had to give myself a raise this year. Bought my own chair. Secret Labs Game of Thrones chair. So friggin comfortable!
  • Here is my current big project. Have to CMM inspect all the castings for these. It's the new scoops they are putting on the aft side of the F-15. It's my program and takes 45 minutes per part as programmed. Turned the movespeed up to 350 from 100 and I'm down to half hour run time. I love doing defense work!
