I have resigned from my current position, to accept another with a mid size supplier machine shop. They are about to buy their first CMM and want me to help select, install, and make it my baby... might be pcdmis but zeiss has significantly stronger support in western canada, Hexagon has work to do.
Worked for this company in the past, wrote and set up ISO 9001 QMS for them(from zero to certified in 5 months) then decided I hated qms and went back to cmm
today I floated the idea that they might be shooting too high for their entry to CMM inspections. I asked what they have in mind and it was a fair size zeiss, clean room built for it the works ya know, some of the parts have really tight specs. They are too focused on one machine that can do everything they need, maybe a better start is a small 4.5.4 shop floor that the shipping guy can operate as he packs parts in the box(could train him to operate in no time), knowing their product at least half of it could run like that... takes their start up budget from 200k to less than 50k for a used 4.5.4
you guys might not get rid of me that easy :P
within days of setting that little fkr up I could have final inspections happening as parts came off the machines, instant feedback to machinists in process and lean as it eliminates taking parts to the CMM and pretty much the entire activity of final inspection for a great deal of product. I urge them to take the inspections to the shop floor in process as much as possible rather than haul finished parts to the qc lab for verification
