Hiring Requirements/Test to weed out incompatibility

Alright Gentlemen and Female Gentlemen I need some guidance/help. Ill lay the frame work of the situation....

I am the programmer currently and have trained the individual.. lets call her H... who was intended to be my replacement (after I take my promotion to be head of the department) a little bit here and there over the course of a year...... And you all know as well as i do... some people aren't cut out for this job.

Now I talked with my boss and he is in agreement about the situation. We need someone else to take this role. So there will be a job opening for the position for more money than you're average Joe. H is gonna want that position but she is not cut out for it. No problem solving. minimal computer skills. no excel. no programming. no enthusiasm. difficulty understanding simpler things like workplanes and vectors. etc.

Now I need to make a test that will not depend on seniority but highlight the key aspects of a to be programmer. But GD&T/programming knowledge wont be a criteria. Must promote from within.

So there is the situation. I need to find the best candidate who is not the person I have trained for a year. How can I create a test/requirements to get the person I want/need to be in this situation. Its a very political situation that must at the very least seem to be a fair shot to everyone who meets the requirements. Neutral faceNeutral faceNeutral face

Question #1. What is the centermost point of the universe?

  • What was the most stressful situation you faced at work? How did you handle it?

Management was asking for parts with an unrealistic timeframe and I was getting in trouble when their timeframes were not met so I quit.

Describe a situation at work when you were faced with a problem you could not solve. What did you do?

    Problem: Management, Solution: Quit.

Are you the type of person who will always try to solve the problem on your own before asking for help?

If management allows... I will try to solve the problem.

Describe a time when you used a creative solution to tackle some job-related problem.

    See answer to question 2.

How do you cope when you face a challenge you’ve never previously experienced?

I excel at that... if management allows the proper time.

Give us an example of a situation when you realized that you won’t be able to meet the set deadline. What did you do?

Management told me to sign off on the parts anyways. I refused, was then accused of having a bad attitude so I quit.

How do you build a troubleshooting process?

Do what management says in a ridiculous timeframe (usually wanting solved in under 30 seconds or 3 days ago) or quit. I quit,

In your opinion, what makes you a great problem solver?

Looking at my past results when there was good management. Also, knowing when to quit helps too.

What do you do in a situation when you cannot seem to find the right solution to a problem?

Ask management what to do and wait for an answer that is against industry standards and my personal ethics... then quit.

When you are faced with an urgent problem, how do you react? Are you the type of person who jumps right into solving problem, or do you first carefully assess the situation?

Assess the situation then work on a solution, then get 5 minutes into the process just to have management say its taking too long and to just sign the parts off so I quit.

What experience do you have with word and spreadsheet processing?

Pretty good but not phenomenal but nothing is good enough or fast enough for management.

Can you think in 3 dimensional space? If I showed you this print, can you visualize the part in your head looking at it in 2D?

I think in the space management allows then I think about how happy I am to not be in managements space anymore.
