Valve Seat Module And Measuring Valve Seats

We run both Zeiss Calypso and PC-DMIS here and when we measure a cylinder head for all the valve parameters(deck, seat, valve guide, etc) we get answers that we agree with on Calypso but not on PC-DMIS. We are trying to scan both with circles and lines and trying both best fit cones/circles and best fit re-compensate cones/circles to get gauge lengths with no luck. Has anyone else measured cylinder heads with good results? Although this can be accomplished here with Calypso we need to be able to measure at a different location using PC-DMIS.

You need to use 'projection' with PC Dmis for best results I always found. Calypso is not a stand-alone application but a series of software modules that 'talk' to each other 'seamlessly' & as such there are some software shortcuts in operation.

This follows the modern trend in Cmm of having cones & cylinders & planes intersect or at best interact with each other to give the results you want to see. Whereas the ‘old school’ method is to preset off your datums & actually go and probe the Gauge Points looking for ‘Metal On’ or ‘Metal Off’ condition. Just vector in & job done.

Lines up the cones, intersections, diameters can all be done ‘old school’ & consistent results made my customers breathe a sigh of relief when they ‘learnt’ how to probe the job & get repeatability & equal to any surface scans.

Always a bonus @ Audit time.

    Love the handle.
  • I was running a customer CMM using PCDMIS v2013. I noticed that there was a wizard to scan valve seats and guides using the GM standards. I never used it, but that is something you can look into.
