Physically moving my CMM

I need to move my CMM (Optiv C321) to a new location. I kmow it is recommended that I have Hexagon do it because a special pallet is needed. I have one so I want to move it myself and call on Hexagon only to calibrate. Has anybody done if yourself? Can anybody anticipate any problem with moving it myself?
  • I have mine on a custom built platform that can be lifted with a hand jack. I've moved it with no issues. It's small enough for a few guys to move it as suggested. Be careful!
  • Never moved our Optiv, but we've moved plenty of bridge CMMs carefully around the shop floor with a pallet jack.
Our trusted Hexagon tech said we were doing fine.
  • If you move it and break it, it's all on you for replacement. If someone else moves it, it's on them to replace it.

True story, About 15 years ago one of our guys tried to move a large optical cmm. He managed to drop it off a loading dock.. We wound up with a pile of granite gravel and twisted sheet metal.

    ..... this hurts me

I believe you can hire hexagon to move it for you. For me, if it is a small machine I would try and move it myself but our 09.15.08 is a bit too big and expensive for me to even think about moving
  • Every time our hexagon tech comes in for annual calibration, he always has pictures of wacky CMM tragedies. Just this August, he came in with photos of a bridge CMM falling off a forklift when someone tried to load it onto a truck. It was beautiful.

We've moved bridge CMMs many times with pallet jacks across the shop floor, but will call hexagon when moving between buildings. Just have multiple hands on deck and be patient.
  • We just go done moving on of our company's Global 7-10-7 from one building to another which was about a 400 yard trek through.one building, down the ramp then up the ramp and into the other building. We did tell the bosses that we did not want to be responsible for it should anything happen during the move and they were OK with that. There we 5 of us involved and everything went ok. We did install the factory bracing before moving it.

This was my 7th or 8th CMM move from one location to another. Just got to take it slow and easy and make the path is clear of obstructions BEFORE moving it.
