Excessive crashes with PCDmis

Thank you all with the probable solutions.  What I could implement immediately has been put in place and so far, I have reduced crashes by roughly 80%.  Maybe another week and I will have more confidence.  I think the biggest "fix" was disabling the Home Page.  It is a nice feature, and the GUI makes finding recent programs easier, but something must not quite be there yet.  I know with my set-up, sometimes just moving the mouse cursor over the program icon could crash and if I tried to view Recent programs, it would be a lost cause.

As someone that has gone through many different CMM software packs from GeoMet and other Dos-based systems through modern Verisurf, Calypso, Cosmos, and PC-Dmis.   The last time programming with PC-Dmis on a consistent basis was version 2.7 with very limited 3.1 (too buggy to use).  Coming back into programming CMMs, I have to agree with some that pound for pound, Hexagon has a more user-friendly and powerful package.  There is a reason they have the majority of the market globally.  The caveat, there is a lot going on in the background I would like to have some more visibility with, and it can be just as frustrating as most of the others out there when you need to just get stuff done.  Most of the time I just need numbers and then an arm  There is always a tradeoff, and you have to decide where you want to feel the pain.  Find the bugs, understand them, and find your workarounds.  This one was tough since the workaround cost just as much or more time as the bug.

I agree with you Zen Cat. Why change a profitable business model. The main improvements I see now are to keep the customers attention on Hexagons products portfolio using nexus.

I'm not sure if disabling the Home Page will also hide the recent tab, but here's my recent fix to a similar problem;

One of our CMM desktops would constantly crash (3 times a day), the only solution was to manually unplug the tower and restart. It always appeared to be a Windows issue. The error code was often "not enough resources" or "memory" related. We are in a high mix low volume shop, and this machine is our inspection workhorse loading lots of different program files per month. Turns out, for the last year or more the previous programmer had never cleared the recents tab...Over 200 or so programs trying to load that thumbnail and whatever background links was throttling the computer. 

Selecting the first program in the recents tab, holding shift and clicking the last program, then using the three dots at the top right to "remove recent" clears the Recents Tab. In our case PC-DMIS has been faster to load and the computer hasn't crashed since clearing recents. 

I'm not sure if disabling the home page also clears whatever cache PC-DMIS is referencing for the Recent tab, but if you can do so give clearing recents a try. I see you mention even hovering over a program will crash PC-DMIS.... maybe there a backdoor method to clearing the recents. 

is there somewhere you can set the MRU number?  Maybe someone cranked the value up to 'infinity' when it should be 10.

I see this value in my PC-DMIS Settings Editor is set to 4. My home page shows 5 programs underneath the "Recent" header directly beneath New Routine and Open Routine button. Maybe there is a separate setting for the Recent tab (selectable from the side menu)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QGe-8uIFeB0 This video suggests that MostRecentFileList value alters the number of programs you see in the menu under "File" not the recents list. I see what you mean about MRU, but Hexagon may have changed where it's referenced over the years. I'm on 2020 R1
