DEMINSIONING A CROSS SECTION

So, I have a part that is essentially a ring with an ID and an OD. I have scanned them to get the dimensions and put them on the report. The customer wants the C/S on the report as well. Is there any way to use the scans to get the C/S dimension? or do I Have to actually take a single point on both the ID and OD and then use a distance dimension to report it? Most of our parts will be done this way and would like to make the routines shorter with less features.

  • Yes, I totally agree with you, but 99% of the parts we make are Polymers which are out of round by nature (not by much). As soon as we cut them off a billet they warp or grow due to stress in the material. So, taking many different measurements would be a nightmare to look at. It's one of the great joys of machining plastic seals. Most of the time are parts go straight to an oil field where the beat the seals in a pipe with a wrench "hammer" but for some reason they want them perfect lol.
