Log Viewer 2025.1

What is Log Viewer 2025.1?

What does it do?

  • I am not entirely sure, but it comes automatically bundled in PC-DMIS 2025.1's install with no option to opt out of it to remove the bloat. I at least didn't see an option to uncheck installing the application at least. In the install folder there is a PDF you can read. C:\Program Files\Hexagon\Log Viewer 2025.1 64-bit\LogViewer.pdf

    And also this link.

  • I had the option to not install it, but then I got a message telling me I should because it allows new features (maybe updates, don't recall now) to be added. I got the impression it's something that works silently in the background. Of course, that could be a bad thing if something is added that inadvertently corrupts existing programs. Kind of like FDA approvals for a new wonder drug that gets pulled from the market in two years because it's growing third limbs from ear lobes, but "only in some people".

  • Log viewer is a new tool which gathers information similar to what we've previously gathered for debug.txt.  However, it's much more useful than debug.txt because that only records machine communication.  The log viewer is able to capture much more - CPU, GPU and memory utilisation, Windows error messages and logs, NC Sensor logs (for laser sensors) etc.  Our hope is that all this additional information will enable us to chase down the root cause of, and ultimately fix, more crashes.  A lot of the crash reports we receive simply list the Windows Kernel as the component which triggered the crash.  This doesn't help us much because we don't have access to the Windows source code - I doubt Microsoft would be willing to share it.  During our in-house testing it has already proven itself invaluable by helping to identify possible causes of Homepage instability which we are currently addressing.

    .

One, final advantage of LogViewer over the traditional debug.txt is that it doesn't affect system performance or clog up the hard-drive if left running.  I strongly advise all users to run with LogViewer enabled and to share any logs/files that it generates with tech support when requested.
