PC DMIS new install issues

Hello everyone, I'm new to the forum though I've been lurking for a little while, and I have a couple questions. I usually find answers searching through existing posts, but I've been unable to find what I need.

Here's a rundown of what I'm using for clarity; PC-DMIS 2014.1 SP6 running on a Dell Precision M4800 and a Leica AT402 laser tracker.

So recently I was having some serious stability issues with PC DMIS, crashing every 45 minutes or so out of the blue. I tried several fresh installs and different service packs as well as updating every driver i could find related to PC-DMIS but to no avail. My company's IT tech installed a new SSD hard drive to see if that was the issue but it got worse after that, crashing every 10-15 minutes, as well as when any toolbars or windows were clicked on.

It became more or less unusable at that point so upper management was floating around the idea of renewing licenses and SMA's which are ridiculously expensive, but then I took the computer from our Roamer arm (same Dell Precision M4800) and installed PC-DMIS to that and now it works flawlessly, haven't had one crash in the 4 hours I've been playing with it, crisis averted and happy management.

So I guess I have two questions,

what could have caused all those problems with the first PC?

The second is a little more mundane but still irritating. When I take a point with the laser and accept it (on the new PC), a point and a location measurement are created at the same time. In the last year that I've been using PC-Demon only a point was created. I really don't want the locations clogging up the edit command and neither does the shop foreman, so is there a setting or parameter change that I've missed? I've gone through File, Edit, View, Insert, Operation and Tracker about 5 times in case I missed something, as well as every single tool bar but can't get it to stop. As I said, mundane but still a nuisance.

And thanks to everyone that has posted so much valuable information here, it has been instrumental in teaching me how to find my way around this monster of a program.
  • First question

Sometimes it just isn't possible (or worth it) to spend the time to find out the cause of a Windows problem (which .DLL is wrong or whatever). If you don't find the problem in two hours, the faster solution is to clear the computer completely and install Windows again, preferably from a 'generic' install disk, not the computer manufacturer's, as they often put on a lot of rubbish that degenerates the computer. Then run Windows Update repeatedly until nothing turns up.

Then check the graphics driver, there's probably a newer one available from the manufacturer of your graphics card. Then install PC-DMIS and verify in Edit -> Graphic Display Window -> Open GL... that PC-DMIS is using your graphics card and not 'Integrated Graphics' or something.

    Second question

F5 -> Dimension tab -> button Auto Dimension setup...
  • It's so simple, explained like this, Dr Anders !
  • Hmm, didn't even occur to me to wipe and reboot perhaps that will be our next step, makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. And the auto dimension is no longer active and I am very happy, thanks a bunch for the help.

    +1!!
I only wish the good Dr Anders was available for house calls!
But.... I must mention about updated GFX drivers, I installed latest Nvidia driver the other day on my Dell Precision 7510 laptop which is my offline programming tool. All was great! ..... except for the fact that in every release installed (2015.1 thru 2017R2).... for Auto Features, the Show Hit Targets toggle was inoperative!! Argh..... very frustrating! So after much hair pulling and aggravation, I finally decided to roll back to a mid-2016 driver. Voila!! the toggle was back to health!!
Moral of story.....Totally agree that using latest driver is a good rule of thumb....but as with all rules, there are always exceptions! Sunglasses

Blush! But that would be very (extremely!) expensive, considering travel cost...

My general rule is: try the latest from the card manufacturer, if that doesn't work try the latest from the computer manufacturer, if that doesn't work close your eyes and select an older version randomly... (not really, just work your way backwards through the versions). Finally, at least once we had to uninstall the last Windows Update to get everything working (and keep on not doing Windows Update until there was an even newer graphics driver available). And if you have an NVidia card, don't forget to check that pcdlrn.exe is allowed to use the card (NVidia control panel)!
  • Heh! Yeah, ever since Intel began placing GFX chips on the processor, it's been one more thing one must check for proper Nvidcard performance!
