correct way to setup and check profile tolerance of the part using Laser scan

We need more information to properly advise. What hardware (laser scanner) are you using? What kind of surface and profile tolerances are on the part you are trying to scan?

It might help if you added some more specific questions, and informed folks what kind of equipment you are using. There are many laser scanners and they work in different ways. 

I would for instance turn on the Romer arm, connect to the scanner, wait for things to detect in RDS, then open PolyWorks and select the appropriate scanning profile for the level of detail required, hold the trigger and do an impersonation of a Jedi in combat, then hit finalize and save the data.

Its been a while since I used the laser with the Demon, I think RDS controls your scanning profile?

Also you should check with your quality administration and ensure the Romer Arm will meet your company standards, you will be pushing the 4x rule with an arm that big and a profile of .01"

Align the part according to your datums.

Scan the part.

Apply colormap (CAD needed, tolerance ± half the profile tolerance). Apply deviation flags to your liking.

I have found that this is the easiest way to show non-metrologists the state of the surface profile.

What do you mean by  4x rule..... 

What is your scan setting for different type of surfaces as Casting, we have hard time for laser scan to pick up ?

And also if the part was under cut let's say 0.01"- 0.040" on very small narrow pass, how to adjust the scan pitch setting?

it USED to be the 10-to-1 rule.  Your measuring device must have an accuracy of 1/10 the tolerance.  It has been 'changed' to 4-to-1 by most.  Meaning that if your tightest tolerance is +/-0.010" your measuring device must be capable of measuring down to +/-0.001".  capable of, not just able to report that many decimal places.  An arm usually is AT BEST able to measure to +/-0.0015" so the 'tightest' tolerance your should use it for is +/-0.006".  Add in Uncertainty and you are riding the ragged edge of disaster trying to approve that profile.

NikitaT Have you had any PC-DMIS Portable training?  A lot of what you are asking would normally be covered during one of our training courses.  There is also a lot of information in the online help files.  For example, this is the section that covers customising your data collection settings: Profiles Section.  There are also other setting within the RDS software which handles the connection between PC-DMIS and the arm.
