What does the dataflow and vacation has in common?

I did not post anything last couple of weeks. I was out of office for couple of days and then I was very busy. Preparation for new minor release, testing the software, writing new documents, helping colleagues around the world with their projects… It was fun.

Anyway, like I said, I went for vacation for couple of days with family. Me, my wife and 2 kids, visiting my brother. It was fun 5 days full of laughs and occasional screaming. And you know the drill. You go to nice restaurants, fun parks, cafes, museums, and all sort of different places.

With 2 small kids such trips around the city require quite a lot of planning. Not always easy to plan it beforehand. And you must be prepared to make exception from the plan. And that sometimes, the plan is not going to work as intended.

In my head, this is a great analogy to what we try to do with our customers right from the start. We plan. We plan for data flow and for their goal. Usually, the goal is to control the process. Ideally using quality control charts (QCC). But what is the process? What do I want to control? And is the dataflow planned good enough to use the QCC? Is it going to work as intended? A lot of questions must be answered. But if you answer them, you are a step closer to better and more effective manufacturing processes.
